The classic failure mode
Your UPI payment shows debited, the merchant or friend never received credit, and chat support recycles “credit within 3–5 working days” without a clear UTR trail.
Capture these fields immediately
- UTR / RRN / transaction ID
- Debit timestamp, amount, payer VPA, payee VPA
- SMS / email debit alerts
- Screenshots from both payer and intended beneficiary apps
Escalation ladder
- In-app dispute / failed transaction ticket with UTR.
- Bank grievance / GRO / Principal Nodal Officer for the remitting bank.
- If unresolved within published TATs, prepare for RBI Integrated Ombudsman filing with your paper trail.
Keep the tone factual
State: amount, debit time, UTR, relief sought (credit reversal or completion), and prior ticket numbers. Avoid accusing individuals of fraud unless you have evidence — stick to failed settlement facts.

FAQ
- Who do I complain to first — bank or UPI app?
- Start with the remitting bank/PSP that debited you, using the UTR / transaction reference. Also raise the issue in the UPI app dispute flow if available.
- Is compensation automatic?
- Turnaround and compensation frameworks evolve under RBI guidance. Document dates carefully; do not assume automatic daily penalty without checking the current circular applicable to your case.
